BUCKINGHAM PALACE
Both tourists and locals recognize the majestic front of Buckingham Palace, prominently situated at The Mall’s conclusion. However, it wasn’t until 1913 that this splendid feature was added by King George V and Queen Mary. Rewinding to 1633, the palace didn’t even bear a royal flag; it was the property of Lord Goring. Unfortunately for him, a contract oversight compelled him to relinquish ownership to the Royal Family during King George III’s reign. Ouch!
Imagine, if not for Lord Goring’s slip in understanding 17th-century British property laws, the Royal Family’s residence might be somewhere else! The famous balcony from which they greet masses? Credit goes to Queen Victoria, who desired a spacious balcony for farewelling and welcoming her troops. This spot remains the Royal Family’s choice for significant public appearances.
But Buckingham Palace isn’t merely for show. It’s the Monarchy’s true operational hub, hosting daily meetings and ceremonies with global dignitaries. Yes, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh reside here, though they’re nestled in the palace’s secluded sections, so a spontaneous meet-up is unlikely.
Yet, there’s a lot for the average visitor to explore. The Queen’s Gallery, showcasing the Royal Collection, welcomes guests year-round. Additionally, from February to November, the Royal Mews is accessible, and the State Rooms invite visitors during August and September (with occasional tours throughout the year when the Queen is away).
